    Hi everyone,

We are back from Darwin and proud of the effort of the team to rebound to strong form. We will have more speed to come!!

It was unfortunate for Steve on Saturday. We had a small electrical component break and it caused the car to lose spark. It was a result of a guest accidently kicking the wire harness as they were either getting in or out of the car on Friday. We didn't know about the issue until it happened on Saturday (when the car dropped off the jacks it was enough force to break the seal between the housing and the wire.

Steve will be strong over the remaining rounds. He set the second fastest time of the race on Sunday so he has the speed and experience to do as well as we all would hope.

    Thanks for your support.

Great work, pity Winging Kids car didn't expire (Explode) on Sunday!! O'h for just a few more laps!
I would luv to know if the new conrtol camshaft effected the car set up much!
Does the new camshaft make the car less vicious out of corners?
Does it lessen the average weight of fuel used per lap compared with the FPR devolped cam?
It obvioulsly hurt HRT & other CHEVs as I believe they were running very very high valve lift!

Hi Gavin mate if the control cam has or is effecting the red side we would have heard about it by now, they would be screaming and carrying on you could imagine it couldn't you? just like the parity crap from 2 years ago.

As for the guest kicking the lead how funny is that? They would know who they were LOL
Funny story depnds how you read this I suppose but last year at Bathurst my son got a chance to sit in Frostys car before the shoot out any way where we sit on pit strait we were first to see the car come in on fire, I turned to my young bloke and upped him for the rent "what the hell did you play around with yesturday" he shat him self especialy when I said Frosty is going to come looking for you. I set him strait that it had nothing to do with him (eventualy). My point is that FPR is so accomidating they let a kid sit in the car while preping it for the shoot out at Bathurst, the mechanics were keen to answer our questions and Frosty was starting to prep for the shoot out but still had time for the kids. Dont change a thing FPR, its things like, letting guests jump in the cars, thats what seprates you guys from the rest, maybe not let any fatties get in to get tangled up in the wiring loom Haha

Mark - Richo must have walked under a ladder, I just hope all the bad luck he has experienced this year is at an end.
I could not agree with you more on how accomodating FPR is compared with other Ford teams that I have approched over the years.
I was luck enough to be part of the ride day @ Barbagallo two weeks ago, Rode with Richo for several 58 second laps (55 sec) would be a top 10 qualifier in the race car, spent hours talking to the engineers, with them explaining the telemetry & how to interpret it all. - very very interesting.
They had a race engine & gear box on display , I was crawling all over them asking the engine builder heaps of pointed questions, with very open & honest answers in return. That gearbox is not much bigger than a top loader by the way, it's an amazing bit of kit !
Then had a 32 lap Grand Prix in the fast karts around the short track like Bathurst with Driver changes, Dueled wheel to wheel with Frosty & Luke Youlden for a couple of laps. Out of 30 odd teams we came 3rd. When I got home I showed the trophy to my 6 year old, his reply was 'But Dad it's only 3rd! Gota love a boys honesty dont you! James Moffat came 1st!
Then to top the day off we had a dinner at one of Perths premium restaurants, where I spent a lot of time talking to Richo about driving style & what he does to relax away from racing then sat next to James Moffat & several other FPR personel for a really great dinner.
I could not believe my luck sitting next to James as his father is one of the all time greats and I have watched James progression though other catagories with much interest!
I would still like to know however , what the team thinks of the new control cam.
    Cheers Clackers

    Gavin,

I am really glad you had a great experience at our event in Perth. We really enjoyed ourselves as well.

As for the controlled cam - for us there is no major difference between what we ran before and the new cam that we are running now. As a result neither driver can feel any difference in the car and in fact the car that you had your ride in was fitted with the contol cam.

We are still a little down on power when compared with the other leading teams but we have a new upgrade that will be on the cars for Townsville so that should help us a little more.

    Thanks for your support.

Hi Gavin wow what a day my point exactly FPR do things like that for the fans absolutly brilliant. Did you get a chance to see the fuel injection set up on the engine blows me away the way the injector nozzels sit in the intake tumpet thingys wonder if they ever get a nozzel part blocked looks like fuel could miss the trumpet and spray else were

    Mark R -
Thanks so much for the reply.
As for the new upgrades, it appears as though FPR dont need very much based on some of Richos race lap times at Darwin and the times of the first 10 qualifiers, however it just proves that qualifying is just so, so important to the outcome of a weekend.

Mark G - Yes I did spend a lot of time crawling all over the engine wishing the whole engine, especially the fuel injection set up & gearbox was in my car. With the amount of air these engines consume, it would probably suck the fuel down even if it was spraying way from the inlet valve.
As for blockages I would assume that FPR pays very close attention to fuel safety & integrity, especially after the Bathurst fire. The filtration would be the full monty . My guess is that the fuel pressure would be almost enough to use an injector as a cutting jet so any particles if any would probably be blasted out.
Each of those induction tumpets are made of a carbon fibre composite & weigh less than a box of matches. I would assume that the length & position of the injectors could be used as a way of tuning the car - that is for tracks that have high and constant RPM the tumptets would be longer & the injectors further away from the valve to get air speed. Tight tracks with corners that require lots of low down torque (or punch) the trumpets would be shorter. Its a bit like having the old low rise two barrel manifold for really low down torque & a high rise double pumper four barrel manifold for higher RPM
Its a pity they dont have something automatic like the BMW VANOS system or Porsches 'Variable induction system that alters the induction length depending of what the engine requires. I suppose is like the Fords new Coyote engine which has infiniely variable cam timing for all four camshalfs is another way of achieving a similar outcome.

Hi Gavin yeah they would run pretty high pressures but I would have thought the injectors would have to atomise the fuel first like a spray pattern similar to diesel injector the cars are an awsome bit of gear. How's the dry sump setup it would easy to spend days just crawling over these cars

  • Gavin Clayton

    Gavin Clayton | 11:37PM - June 24th 2010

    Hi Mark G,
They had James Moffats race car on display which I spent a lot of time trying to look underneath, as the side skirt are so low its almost impossible to see anything, however the interior layout of the car appears to be very different to that of the current FG's raced by Frosty & Richo.
I would love to see under the car say on a hoist, just to see the position of the gearbox, coolers & especially the front & rear suspension layout etc.
The dry sump set up confused me for a whiIe why I tried to make sense of it all, as I am just a very interested Sparky with no formal mechanical qualifications, but I have tinkered with every piece of machinery I've ever owned or built (Including the lawnmower) even as a child.
However all the fluid connections 'Quick release type are really weird', they look like small aluminium collar clamps & have a small cable tie around them to keep them closed, I was told what they were called, but sorry the day put my mind into sensory overload.
Interesting that that Mark R admitted that they are down slightly in horsepower to say SBR & DJR or those defectors in 'Yoda's Phone Booths"
I would love to know what particular areas that they are concentrating on with regards to these upgrades?
As they say their is only one subsitute for cubic inches - thats cubic feet or in a drivers brief to his engineer -
'I need more power, more grip, faster entry, mid & out of corner speed, better bakes, 1 lap old green qualifying tyres that stay that way for 30 laps, a lighter car, better economy, faster gear changes, faster pit stops, a track thats been sprayed with traction compound with no traffic & if you can arrange it a slight pay increase it would be appreciated'.
    Cheers Clackers

got the paper on the sunday after frosty won on the saturday looking forward to open up my copy of the herald sun went to the sports section and was gutted one small picture and a little bit of writing if it was a olden that won there would be a massive page of the car and winner even in the past when ford won a race to my shock there was a stinking olden photo instead of the real car that won that race and the ford pictures are 9 times out of ten in black and white when the olden ones are in colour and that just pisses me right off
